We had a fantastic studio outing to the Design Museum last week, running a design masterclass for some extremely sparky students from across the UK. Sneak peek below, and full story here!
'Sketch' at Arup Associates
As part of the exhibition SKETCH, Peter Ayres of Beep Studio joined Mick Brundle (former Director of Arup Associates) and David Horgan for a happy (read: wine powered) judging session at Arup Associates.
To keep the competition lively, prizes were awarded in the following categories:
- Imagination and Creativity
- Detail and Technical
- Expression and Story Telling
The wide range of styles on display made the judging process extremely difficult.
After we had all selected a handful of favourites (and a handful of peanuts) we pooled our resources, downed our wine, and hammered out our thoughts.
And the winners are...
Architectural control and freewheeling fantasy combine in this fantastic cityscape
Metropolis by Vinicius De Siqueira
First Prize - Imagination and Creativity
Complexity rendered with clarity in Thomas Pearson's drawing ‘Midland Goods Shed - Gable Façade 2013’, worthy winner of the 'Detail and Technical' category.
Exuberant risk taking meets...um... restraint... in this stimulating drawing from Ruth Huntington, winner in the Expression and Storytelling category.
For an in-depth write up on the event, with a wider discussion of drawing, see David Horgan's excellent post on LinkedIn. Thanks to Arup Associates for the invitation!

Some of the many Cherubs spotted in the heavens near Havelock Walk
What do you do with a spare head - any bright ideas?
Behind the scenes...
Beep Studio is located on Havelock Walk, a street of artists studios. Enlivening the street this year are a host of cherubs decorated by the artists, and kindly donated to the street by David Mach, who is based here.
We figured - what better to do with a delightful little cherub than... to saw his head off?
A spot of amateur surgery followed, with the cherub laid on a workbench and decapitated with slightly disturbing relish by Peter... Once the head was removed, we sprayed him silver, and hung him in the doorway for a test run. Even with the secret obvious, the trick worked nicely!
Neighbouring photographer Lenka Rayn H lent her black backcloth, and we were all set to go!
Over the course of one weekend, scores of people rocked up to the studio and stuck their head through the curtain for a 'chelfie', and we've combined a bunch of our favourites into this year's greetings image.
Barber's Pole Cherub
This second design was easy to imagine, harder to pull off: Eventually we realised the best way to do it was to cast a series of straight shadows across the cherub's body, trace the shadow with a pencil and then carefully follow the pencil lines with masking tape before spraying with some spectacularly lurid pink paint!
Thanks to the ever-helpful Emma Margaret Smith for this one, which has since featured on many Twitter and Instagram posts. Emma is also one of the smiling faces in the Cherub montage.
We had great fun putting the cherubs together, and enjoyed watching everyone have fun with them. Looking forward to whatever surprises 2017 may hold!
Much love, and best wishes for the festive season,
Beep Studio.

Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards
Last night we attended a glittering, entertaining, and informative evening in central London for the 'Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards'. The awards 'celebrate awesomeness in data visualisation around the world'.
Beep Studio has long been friends with author David McCandless, and contributed graphics (including images of viruses and dictators moustaches) to his bestselling book 'Information is Beautiful'. Since then the IIB empire has grown, with a website, a sequel, TED talks, posters, and masterclasses in data visualisation. We're thrilled to be collaborating with such a forward thinking group, and had a thrilling evening among talented folk.
The evening showcased a range of truly jaw dropping, mind expanding work, including this small selection:
