National Opera Studio
Transforming an historic building and centre of operatic excellence
The National Opera Studio commissioned Beep Studio to refurbish its centre of operations in Wandsworth, South West London in time for its 40th anniversary celebrations in 2018.
NOS provides the highest quality professional training for singers and ‘répétiteurs’ - operatic accompanists. Places are highly contested, with 16 successful candidates selected from hundreds of applicants. An intense training programme reflects the environment of the professional opera world, and many NOS-trained artists have gone on to build successful international careers.
Beep Studio's proposal refocuses the life of NOS by creating pleasant communal spaces for staff and students alike, activated and enhanced by the life of the Studio, and by the visual culture of the operatic world beyond.
The refurbishment project had the following goals:
• To encourage a culture of creativity
• To open up spaces for wider use
• To attract the best students and staff
• To reflect and enhance their work

“The studio looks and feels bigger, fresher and more inspiring. The design has created a calming and creative environment in our music rooms, and we’re all thrilled with the final result. We are thrilled to have worked with Beep Studio on the refurbishment of our ground floor spaces. Given a brief with a very tight budget, Beep came up with innovative and creative solutions, including designing us a stunning and unique feature light for our office. The brief was to create an inspiring space where those coming through our doors to work, train or visit feel a palpable sense of creative energy, a modern and fresh space reflecting the vision and values of our organisation. Beep inherently understood this brief and, working closely with us and the creative construction company Nicholas Alexander, have delivered results that we are thrilled with and that is noticed with delight (and some envy!) by all those who come through our doors. ”
